The first thing that came to mind when told to think about American culture is the American flag. The American flag is the heart of our country. Without freedom we defiantly would not be thedame culture we are today.Another thing that stuck out for me is food. Americans love food. That is why there are so many over weight people inAmerican. Americans care more about home they feelfeatherthan how they look, they would much rather eat McDonald’s over a fruit salad anyway.  Thelast thing I took a picture of is the American dollar. In America we value money more than anything else I think. From the day were born we are taught to love money. Without money in America you are nothing. It’s sad to say but you can get anywhere in life in America if you have money.

Homework 4

1. I think that shopping and having the nicest things does create alienation. I think for most people if they cannot by the best clothes or the nicest cars they feel superior to the people who can. I think that these people don’t go out and do as much as they probably should for the fear of what people will say. Parents sometimes even have problems when sending their kids to school because they can’t have the nicest backpacks or the nicest shoes.
2. I think that if salaries were increased, we would still have this problem. In the world there are always going to be people who make more money than you do. So yeah everyone’s salary will go up so the people who already make more money than you .. will just make even more money. And if peoples salaries were increased then the price of everything would just go up. So, even if salaries would increase you would still be in the same boat.
3. I think that black Friday, the media, and family encourages competitive consumption. I think that the Black Friday holiday really encourages competitive consumption, everyone on this holiday wants to get the best deals and the nicest things, its 100% a competition. The media obviously plays a huge roll in competitive consumption. All kids want to have what they see on tv, even reality tv shows don’t help. Your family is really a big factor too I think. I think this because you don’t want your family to think that you struggle. So you want your kids to have everything their cousins have so they don’t look left behind.
4. Competitive consumption, affects my bank account more than it actually affects me. I would like to have the best things but sometimes I know that just isn’t possible. My family really isn’t materialistic, so growing up I was never pressured to have the best things. Now that I am older it would be nice to have those nice things, but that can’t always happen. So I think that it didn’t shape my identity too much just because the way I was brought up.

2/12/12

  1. I honestly don’t see this catastrophic incident happening at all. I don’t truly think people can predict the future. I am very much a believer in god and I truly think that he is the only one that knows when and why things are going to happen. So no I do not think that this will happen in our lifetime. I think the public would be shocked if it did happen. Personally I think that people will freak out knowing that this is coming but it won’t happen anyway.
  2. Once again I do not think that “robots” will ever take over the health profession. I believe this because first off no person is going to want a robot to take care of them. But if this would happen I think that it would change things completely. It would change the way humans perceive themselves completely. Humans already second guess themselves against monkeys. If they find out a manmade machine could do the same things as humans it would be a lot worse.
  3. Don’t get me wrong robots are good for many things. I think that robots that could help the disabled as in getting them needed things, opening doors, and aid with safety would be a good idea. But as far as taking care of the elderly in place of humans I think that is a terrible idea. Another good think about robots is you wouldn’t have to pay them. But I still don’t think they would do as good of a job as a human would do.
  4. ALL THE TIME. Computers fail very often so why do people think that it would be good to take care of people by the use of a computer, beats me. I have had many papers get lost or not save. I have watched peoples hard drives crash with important documents on them. In a hospital setting computers have made a huge advancement but even there peoples hospital records get lost and stuff doesn’t save like it should.

English 101 HW 2

  1. Deciding who was most admirable was a hard decision for me, I feel that they are all very admirable in their own way. But for me I always admired Bill gates, just for the simple fact he is so incredibly smart and he has brought the world to what it is today. However after reading about Norman Borlaug I am very much convinced that for me he is the most admirable. He is responsible for saving so many people who really don’t have much hope.
  2. The two people who I admire the most are my grandmother and my mom. I admire these people the most because they have taught me to be the person I am today.  My grandmother died a few years back but when she died she was a few credits short of being a doctor. She was the smartest person I’ve ever know and was so well known in the medical field and I want to be exactly like that. My parents would actually be the next people I admire but since I can only pick one I would have to say my mom is one person that I admire the most. She has accepted my actions and feelings through thick and thin and still loves me to this day.
  3. I don’t think that there is a universal morality. When you are little you must be taught how to share, not to lie, not to hit, not to bite etc.… you must be taught these things through life and that’s how morality builds. So seeing as how you have to be taught not to do these things there can’t be universal morality, because that would mean you are born with these traits.
  4. The 5 different elements of morality are harm, fairness, community, authority, purity. I think that Americans tend to rank authority pretty high. The reason why people get an education and get a high ranking job is to have authority, that is a big deal to many people. Another element I think is very high is harm, Americans are usually very concerned with their safety for obvious reasons.
