Homework 4
1. I think that shopping and having the nicest things does create alienation. I think for most people if they cannot by the best clothes or the nicest cars they feel superior to the people who can. I think that these people don’t go out and do as much as they probably should for the fear of what people will say. Parents sometimes even have problems when sending their kids to school because they can’t have the nicest backpacks or the nicest shoes.
2. I think that if salaries were increased, we would still have this problem. In the world there are always going to be people who make more money than you do. So yeah everyone’s salary will go up so the people who already make more money than you .. will just make even more money. And if peoples salaries were increased then the price of everything would just go up. So, even if salaries would increase you would still be in the same boat.
3. I think that black Friday, the media, and family encourages competitive consumption. I think that the Black Friday holiday really encourages competitive consumption, everyone on this holiday wants to get the best deals and the nicest things, its 100% a competition. The media obviously plays a huge roll in competitive consumption. All kids want to have what they see on tv, even reality tv shows don’t help. Your family is really a big factor too I think. I think this because you don’t want your family to think that you struggle. So you want your kids to have everything their cousins have so they don’t look left behind.
4. Competitive consumption, affects my bank account more than it actually affects me. I would like to have the best things but sometimes I know that just isn’t possible. My family really isn’t materialistic, so growing up I was never pressured to have the best things. Now that I am older it would be nice to have those nice things, but that can’t always happen. So I think that it didn’t shape my identity too much just because the way I was brought up.
